HAPPY DAYS: Whitireia New Zealand design student Edi Yang is optimistic about his chances as a finalist in Australian Design Week with a poster he made, featuring his own lettering.

Whitireia New Zealand design student Edi Yang arrived from Indonesia in February looking for a bright future and, less than a year into a diploma in graphic design, he is up for an international accolade.

An assignment to design a poster using the theme of optimism has landed him a finalist spot in the student brief section of the Australian Graphic Design Awards which ran throughout October.

The competition is an opportunity to showcase the talents of an emerging generation of designers and attracts entries from across Australia and New Zealand.

Mr Yang used the famous phrase "change is gonna come" - which emerged out of the 1960s civil rights movement in America to symbolise hope around the world - to portray the theme in his entry.

Every detail on the poster has meaning, right down to the original font he devised, using circles.

"According to the circle theory, history does not have a beginning or an end. It does not go in a line but in a circle. History creates itself and eventually repeats itself.

"My composition ... with the letters and the words facing upwards, means our life movement is always going forward and never backward," Mr Yang says.

He says the project gave him the chance to alter his outlook on life.

"It's not that easy to be optimistic all the time with what's happening around the world.

"I'm optimistic about being a designer here in New Zealand.

"It would be pretty great to see my work in an exhibition if I win."

Winners of the Australian Graphic Design Awards will be announced later this month.
